Razan Al Mubarak Endorsed for Second Term as IUCN President

TAKREEM Laureate for Sustainability and Environmental Leadership in 2022, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak has been formally endorsed for a second term as President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), following a vote of confidence by the Union’s members during its 113th Council meeting in Gland, Switzerland. The official election will take place at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, to be held in Abu Dhabi from 9 to 15 October 2025. First elected in 2021, Al Mubarak made history as the first President from West Asia and only the second woman to lead the IUCN in its 75-year existence. During her initial term, she was instrumental in shaping the Union’s 20-year strategic vision and the 2026–2029 work programme, emphasizing biodiversity and nature-based solutions as core elements of global environmental, economic, and social agendas. Al Mubarak has pledged to continue leading with independence, transparency, and credibility, stressing the importance of member engagement and translating strategy into measurable, impactful outcomes. “It is an honour to serve as President of the IUCN, especially at a time when biodiversity loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate,” she said. “The Union plays a critical role in bridging science, policy and people to safeguard nature.” In addition to her role at IUCN, Al Mubarak serves as Managing Director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, and Emirates Nature–WWF. She is also the UAE President’s Representative to the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. The IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network, comprising more than 1,400 member organizations and over 16,000 experts. It continues to shape conservation policy and promote nature-based solutions on a global scale.
