TAKREEM Laureate Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

TAKREEM Foundation is proud to celebrate a new milestone in the exceptional journey of Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, who has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of Educational and Academic Leadership. This prestigious honor—bestowed by one of the United States’ oldest and most respected learned societies—recognizes individuals whose contributions have shaped fields, bridged disciplines, and inspired generations. Founded in 1780 by luminaries such as John Adams and John Hancock, the Academy’s first elected members included George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Dr. Khuri now joins this distinguished company. Currently serving as the 16th president of the American University of Beirut (AUB), Dr. Khuri has led the institution through some of the most critical years in Lebanon’s modern history. Under his leadership, AUB has not only weathered extraordinary challenges—including the country’s economic collapse, the Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020, and the global pandemic—but also achieved transformative milestones. These include the reintroduction of academic tenure, the creation of AUB Online, and the launch of AUB Mediterraneo, the university’s first twin campus abroad. Dr. Khuri’s contributions to science, academia, and society have long been recognized. In 2015, TAKREEM Foundation honored him with the Scientific and Technological Achievement Award, in recognition of his pioneering work as an oncologist and academic leader whose career has spanned groundbreaking cancer research, medical education, and visionary institutional leadership. Reflecting on his latest accolade, Dr. Khuri stated: “I am particularly proud to have been nominated by Board Chair Emeritus Philip S. Khoury for the work we have all done together over the last decade at AUB. To be elected in the same class as Gloria Steinem—one of my mother’s heroes and a global icon of feminism—is deeply humbling.” President of the Academy, Laurie L. Patton, remarked: “These new members’ accomplishments speak volumes about the human capacity for discovery, creativity, leadership, and persistence. They are a stellar testament to the power of knowledge to broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding.” Dr. Khuri’s election is not only a personal achievement but also a celebration of Arab excellence in the global arena—a mission that lies at the heart of TAKREEM’s ethos. We salute him for continuing to inspire, lead, and represent the values of knowledge, resilience, and impact.
