HE SHAIKHA PAULA AL SABAH
Special Distinction – 2026
Shaikha Paula Al Sabah has long been a distinctive voice in philanthropy, cultural dialogue, education, and the arts, devoting much of her life to building bridges between cultures and supporting initiatives that place knowledge, creativity, and human development at their core.
Born and raised in New York, she studied child psychology at Hunter College and New York University. In 1974, she moved to the Middle East with her husband, the Kuwaiti diplomat Sheikh Mubarak Jaber Al-Sabah. That passage between two worlds became one of the defining threads of her life, shaping a lasting commitment to fostering greater understanding between East and West.
Education and the wellbeing of children were among her earliest areas of engagement. She became a founding board member of the Early Learning Disability Center in Kuwait, an Arabic-English institution dedicated to addressing the educational needs of children with learning difficulties. Her commitment to education has continued to inform a broader belief in opportunity, inclusion, and learning.
At the same time, Shaikha Paula developed a profound engagement with contemporary art and culture. A collector of Western and Middle Eastern contemporary art, she has consistently viewed culture as a means of creating dialogue across societies. She was a founding board member of Art Dubai and has served with institutions including the Serpentine Gallery in London, Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in New York, and the Arts Arena in Paris.
Her cultural engagement has frequently intersected with humanitarian concerns. Through her involvement with START, she has supported the use of art workshops to reach refugees, orphans, and children with special needs, reflecting her conviction that creativity can be a vehicle for dignity, healing, and inclusion.
Her commitment to recognizing excellence and creating positive role models across the Arab world is also reflected in her longstanding involvement with TAKREEM Foundation, where she served for many years on its Jury Board and today sits on its Board of Trustees.
Across education, philanthropy, humanitarian engagement, and the arts, Shaikha Paula Al Sabah has pursued a remarkably consistent purpose: bringing people and cultures closer together and investing in younger generations as one of the most enduring forms of service.
