Sustainability and Environmental Leadership – 2022

Razan Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is a prominent figure in environmental conservation and sustainability. As the youngest managing director of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), appointed in 2010, she led transformative initiatives, including doubling Abu Dhabi’s protected wildlife areas and introducing the region’s first carbon targets with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030.

Recognized as one of the World Economic Forum’s Top 100 Young Global Leaders in 2018, Razan has established EAD as a leader in regional and global conservation efforts.She is also the founding director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and a co-founder of Emirates Nature, an NGO affiliated with the World Wildlife Fund. Her work includes initiatives to protect the UAE’s coral reefs and establish its first mountain national park.

In addition to her role within the UAE, she chairs the board of the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture and serves on the boards of Masdar and Panthera. Internationally, Razan contributes as an advisory board member of the Rockefeller Foundation Economic Council on Planetary Health, the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, and the Emirates Diplomatic Academy. Her dedication to sustainability and conservation continues to drive positive change both regionally and globally.
