Raja Sidawi

Legacy Award – 2026

For more than five decades, Raja Sidawi has been a pioneering figure in the global energy landscape, combining entrepreneurship, strategic foresight, and an exceptional understanding of the geopolitical and economic forces shaping the world’s energy markets.
Born in Damascus and educated at the American University of Beirut, where he earned a degree in economics in 1962, Sidawi began his professional life in journalism and publishing. For the following decade, he founded and edited newspapers and periodicals in Damascus and Beirut, an early immersion in information, ideas, and international affairs that would profoundly shape his career.
In 1970, he turned his attention to energy, founding a company dedicated to studying and investing in energy projects across the Middle East and Africa. Two years later, he was involved in creating the first Abu Dhabi oil contract with Japan. He expanded to London in 1974 and later invested extensively in the North American energy industry, particularly in petroleum exploration, production, and oilfield services.
Sidawi would eventually bring together the two defining worlds of his professional life: energy and information. In 1986, he acquired The Oil Daily Company and subsequently launched Energy Compass, placing geopolitics at the heart of energy analysis. A decade later, the acquisition of Petroleum Intelligence led to the creation of Energy Intelligence.
As Founder, Chairman and CEO, Raja Sidawi built Energy Intelligence into one of the world’s most respected independent sources of energy information, analysis, research, and insight, helping generations of industry leaders and decision-makers understand the complex relationship between energy, markets, geopolitics, and global affairs.
Beyond business, Sidawi has remained deeply engaged in intellectual and cultural life. His involvement with institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Library of Congress’ James Madison Council, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Council on Foreign Relations reflects a commitment extending beyond energy to culture, knowledge, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas.
Across business, publishing, culture, and public life, his journey embodies entrepreneurial vision, intellectual curiosity, independence of thought, and global perspective. More than an observer of change, Raja Sidawi has spent a lifetime anticipating it, building institutions, connecting worlds, and helping others understand the forces shaping our time.
