Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh, a geneticist and environmentalist based in Bethlehem, has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize by Mairead Corrigan Maguire, a renowned peace activist who won the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to unite Protestant and Catholic women in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Maguire, who has followed Prof. Qumsiyeh’s work for decades, praised the “enduring legacy” of his Wheels of Justice tour, which advocated for justice and non-violent resistance. Prof. Qumsiyeh, a 2020 TAKREEM laureate in the Sustainability and Environmental Leadership category, is celebrated for his advocacy for justice, environmental conservation, and coexistence. During the early 2000s, he led the Wheels of Justice tour across US colleges, schools, mosques, and churches to call for an end to the occupations of Palestine and Iraq. After returning to Bethlehem in 2008, he established a genetics laboratory for cancer treatment and co-founded the Palestine Museum of Natural History (2017) and the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (2014). His vision for one democratic state, where Jews and Palestinians coexist with equal rights, draws on the South African post-apartheid model, as outlined in his book Sharing the Canaanite Land and a 2007 declaration co-authored with academics, including Israeli historian Ilan Pappe. Maguire highlighted Prof. Qumsiyeh’s inspiring contributions to peace and justice, emphasizing his tireless efforts in promoting human rights and sustainability.
