Sustainability and Environmental Leadership – 2018

Dr. Majdah Aburas, a pioneer in Saudi Arabia, is the first woman specializing in treating crude oil pollution in soil. She is the founder and Vice President of the Saudi Environmental Society and served as an Associate Professor in Biotechnology at King Abdulaziz University. Additionally, she holds prominent roles as a board member of the Jeddah Governorate Urban Observatory Council, a member of Egypt’s National Research Center, and a representative of RAED for women’s environmental issues in Saudi Arabia.

 Dr. Aburas has played a significant role in raising public awareness on environmental issues through national educational programs and campaigns. She was the first Saudi woman appointed as an environmental ambassador and was selected as a reviewer and editor for the United Nations Environment Program’s GEO 6, which assesses regional environmental factors affecting human well-being.

Recognized as a leader in environmental management, Dr. Aburas received honors from the Arab League and the Arab EU Center for her contributions. In 2013, she was listed among Arabian Business’s Top 30 women. Notably, she became the first Arab woman co-investigator for NASA’s Desert Water Project, studying groundwater and environmental pollution. Dr. Aburas holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the University of Surrey and has advocated internationally for environmental clauses in human rights, supported by former French President Francois Hollande. Her work has made her a significant figure in the Arab world’s environmental sector.
