JABER AL-AHMAD AL-JABER AL-SABAH - KUWAIT
His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the thirteenth Emir of Kuwait and third ruler post-independence, is revered as a beloved leader. Born in Kuwait City in 1926, he received his education locally and later through private tutors. Sheikh Jaber became Emir in 1977, leading Kuwait through challenging periods, including the Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War, and Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Known as the “shepherd of the community,” he fostered strong, friendly relations with other nations, a strategy that served Kuwait well over time.
During the Iraqi invasion, he established a government in exile in Saudi Arabia and returned in 1991 after the US-led liberation of Kuwait. Throughout his reign, Sheikh Jaber focused on advancing Kuwait’s position in the Arab, Islamic, and international communities.
Before becoming Emir, Sheikh Jaber held various prominent positions, including Chief of Public Security, Minister of Finance, Prime Minister, and Crown Prince. His reign is remembered for his commitment to democracy, human rights, and gender equality, including electoral reforms that allowed women to vote and hold public office. Sheikh Jaber’s legacy includes a Kuwait known for its progressive values, democracy, and international presence. His passing in 2006 at age 79 was mourned across Kuwait and globally, leaving a lasting impact on his nation.
