
IZZAT DARWAZEH - PALESTINE
Professor Izzat Darwazeh is the founding Director of UCL’s Institute of Communications and Connected Systems, one of Europe’s largest with over 130 members. He also holds the Chair of Communication Engineering at UCL and the University of London (since 2006).
Born in Syria in 1963 and later moving to Jordan, he completed high school and his first degree there before relocating to the UK in 1984 for postgraduate studies. In UK academia since 1991, he pioneered new techniques in Optical and Wireless Communication Systems, leading to several world-first demonstrations.
Professor Darwazeh is the author/co-author of over 300 scientific papers and four books in electronic and communications engineering. He consults for major organizations, governments, the UN, and industry leaders, and regularly acts as a consultant to law firms in the UK, Europe, and the USA, serving as an expert witness in telecommunications patent cases.
Beyond academia, he co-founded the UK’s Arab British Association (2008) and the British Palestinian Policy Council (2016). He has also served on several advisory boards, including the Institute of Palestine Studies and the Centre for Palestine Studies at SOAS, University of London (2015–2021).
