Sustainability and Environmental Leadership – 2025

Helmy Abouleish is the CEO of the SEKEM Initiative in Egypt, a pioneering enterprise founded by his father, Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, that has become a global model for holistic sustainable development. Rooted in the desert outside Cairo, SEKEM integrates ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions into one comprehensive vision. It has led the way in biodynamic agriculture, sustainable water management, and renewable energy, while also building thriving enterprises that produce phytopharmaceuticals, organic textiles, and food under the banner of the “Economy of Love.” Beyond business, SEKEM invests deeply in community development, education, healthcare, and culture, with schools, research institutes, and Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, the first university in the Middle East to place sustainability at the heart of its mission. As CEO, Abouleish has steered SEKEM to international prominence, demonstrating how ecological responsibility and economic vitality can reinforce one another. He also serves as Chair of Ecotec and the SEKEM Development Foundation, and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Heliopolis University. Internationally, he has played a leading role in advancing biodynamic agriculture, serving as President of the Biodynamic Federation – Demeter International and contributing to the development of its global principles and values. Abouleish’s influence extends across numerous sustainability and policy networks. He is a member of the Club of Rome, the Schwab Foundation of the World Economic Forum, the World Social Initiative Forum, and the World Goetheanum Association. He also serves on the boards of Cradle to Cradle (C2C) and CIFOR–ICRAF, and in November 2023 he was appointed to the German Foundation Development and Climate Alliance. He is a Firekeeper of the World Ethic Forum, a counselor of the World Future Council, and Secretary General of Chapter Zero Egypt. In 2024, Helmy Abouleish was awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, recognizing his tireless efforts to promote sustainability, climate responsibility, and a more just and regenerative future.
