Lifetime Achievement – 2023

Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah is a renowned British-Palestinian Associate Professor of Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon. He received his medical education at the University of Glasgow and completed his residency training in London. Dr. Abu-Sittah pursued three specialized fellowships: Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery and Cleft Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Kids (GOS), as well as Trauma Reconstruction at the Royal London Hospital. In 2011, he joined the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), where he eventually became the Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

During his tenure, he played a crucial role in AUBMC’s Pediatric War Injuries program and War Injuries Multidisciplinary Clinic. In 2015, he co-founded and directed the Conflict Medicine Program at the Global Health Institute at AUB.Returning to the UK in 2020, Ghassan continues to practice Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the private sector. He also holds honorary positions at Imperial College University of London and King’s College London University. Furthermore, he serves as the Clinical Lead for the Operational Trauma Initiative at the World Health Organization’s EMRO Office. Notably, on the 9th of October 2023, Dr. Abu-Sittah entered the Gaza Strip, dedicating 43 days to working at Shifa Hospital and Al-Ahli-Baptist Hospital during a critical period. His invaluable evidence became a significant part of the South African submission to the International Court of Justice.
