AUB President Fadlo Khuri Among Top 100 Influential Oncologists
Fadlo Khuri, president of the American University of Beirut and a TAKREEM Scientific & Technological Achievement Laureate (2015), has been named among the 100 Most Influential People in Oncology in 2025 by OncoDaily, a global media platform focused on cancer research, clinical practice, innovation, and leadership in oncology. According to the announcement, the annual list recognizes individuals whose contributions have significantly shaped contemporary oncology practice and who continue to advance research, innovation, advocacy, philanthropy, leadership, and education in cancer care. The recognition highlights Khuri’s dual impact as an internationally respected physician-scientist and as the leader of one of the region’s most influential academic health institutions. During his presidency at AUB, he has guided the university through successive national crises—including Lebanon’s economic collapse, the Beirut port explosion, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2023–24 war—while reinforcing AUB’s global standing as a mission-driven academic health institution. The announcement also noted key institutional milestones achieved under his leadership, including the acquisition of AUB’s first community hospital, major health system modernization initiatives, the adoption of the Epic electronic health record system, and AUB’s entry into the COSMOS research consortium, making it the first institution outside the United States to join the network. In addition to his leadership at AUB, Khuri has held endowed academic chairs at Emory University, served on the faculty of MD Anderson Cancer Center, and was editor-in-chief of the journal Cancer from 2011 to 2021. His work in Lebanon has included strengthening national cancer treatment guidelines and advancing tobacco-control policy. His international service includes chairing National Institutes of Health oncology study sections and serving on review committees for ASCO, the American Cancer Society, and the U.S. National Cancer Institute. His distinctions include the AACR Rosenthal Award, the WHO No Tobacco Award, the IASLC Joseph W. Cullen Award, and his election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025.
