APPLIED RESEARCH INSTITUTE - PALESTINE

Sustainability and Environmental Leadership – 2014

Established in 1990, the Applied Research Institute-Jerusalem (ARIJ) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable development in the occupied Palestinian Territory. Founded by Palestinian professionals, ARIJ has pioneered initiatives focused on ‘Self-Development,’ enhancing the use of natural resources, promoting environmental harmony, and advancing scientific knowledge and technical expertise within local communities.

Over its 25-year journey, ARIJ has become a vital resource, supporting sustainable agriculture, water and environmental management, and good governance. The institute’s 70 skilled staff—36% of whom are women—work across diverse fields, including agriculture, biodiversity, geoinformatics, food security, urbanization monitoring, physical planning, renewable energy, human rights, and advocacy.

With projects spanning local, regional, and international stages, ARIJ provides essential data, technical guidance, and consultancy services. Its work emphasizes the vision of “Towards a Sustainable Palestine,” aspiring to a self-sustaining Palestinian state with full sovereignty over its resources and a foundation of democracy, transparency, and good governance.
