AKEF EL MAGHRABY

Lifetime Achievement – 2025

Dr. Akef El-Maghraby’s story is one of medicine at its highest calling, a journey where scientific excellence, humanitarian commitment, and visionary leadership come together to restore not only sight, but hope. Born in Egypt, he trained as an ophthalmologist and quickly emerged as one of the region’s most respected surgeons, known for both his technical mastery and his belief that healthcare must be a right, not a privilege. This conviction guided the creation of what would become one of the most influential medical networks in the Middle East and Africa. As founder and chairman of Magrabi Eye Hospitals & Centers, Dr. El-Maghraby helped build a pioneering institution that now spans more than 30 locations and treats millions of patients across the Arab world every year. His work, as a surgeon, mentor, and administrator, set new standards in eye care, combining medical innovation with accessibility and ethical practice. But what truly sets Dr. El-Maghraby apart is his unwavering dedication to serving underserved communities. Through the Magrabi Foundation, established in 1992, he led a mission to fight preventable blindness, expanding eye-care access to some of the world’s most neglected regions. Under his leadership, five nonprofit hospitals and eye centers were established in countries such as Sudan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Cameroon, and North Lebanon, providing free or low-cost surgeries, screenings, and treatments to those who could not otherwise afford them. His commitment to capacity-building has transformed entire health systems. Dr. El-Maghraby has trained generations of ophthalmologists and medical specialists, supported research, and promoted knowledge exchange across continents. His work strengthened global networks through his roles as President of the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO), a position he held for 18 years, and as Vice-President of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO). Beyond titles, his legacy is deeply human: a restored eye, a saved childhood, a mother who can see her children again. His philosophy has always been simple yet profound, that dignity begins with the ability to see the world clearly. Today, Dr. Akef El-Maghraby stands as one of the great physician-humanitarians of our time: a healer, a philanthropist, and a builder of institutions whose impact transcends borders. Through his hospitals, his foundation, and his mentorship, he continues to shape a future where quality healthcare is accessible to all, and where light reaches every life.
