Scientific and Technological Achievement
Hilal Lashuel, PhD, is an associate professor of life sciences and director of the Laboratory of Molecular and Chemical Biology of Neurodegeneration at the Brain Mind Institute at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Originally from Yemen, he moved to the U.S. at 15 and earned a degree in chemistry from the City University of New York in 1994, followed by doctoral studies at Texas A&M University and the Scripps Research Institute in 1999.
Dr. Lashuel was a visiting associate professor at Stanford University’s Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences (2012–2013) and served as Executive Director of Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) and professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (2014–2016). Named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2012, his research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
He co-founded and serves as secretary general of the Society for Advancing Science and Technology in the Arab World (SASTA), founded in 2010 to advance science, technology, and research in the Arab region. Collaborating with the World Economic Forum, SASTA works with Arab scientists to promote education, science, and technology as drivers of regional transformation and development.
