AMAL BASHA - YEMEN

Outstanding Arab Woman – 2014

Amal Basha is a prominent Yemeni human rights advocate with extensive qualifications, holding a License in Law, a BA in Political Science, Economics & Mass Communication from AUC-Egypt, and a Master’s in Development & Gender from the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University, UK. She co-founded and chairs the Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights (SAF), a leading women’s rights NGO in Yemen. Since 2013, Basha has coordinated Yemen’s “Constitutionalizing Women’s Rights Campaign.” She is also a co-founder of the “Equality without Reservation Regional Network” in Morocco and the Salma Network to Combat Domestic Violence in Palestine.

Basha is a member of various human rights and gender development networks across the Middle East, including CAWTAR in Tunisia and Türkiye’s International Academy for Local Authority and Democracy. Her work with the UN includes serving as a former member of the UNDP’s International Civil Society Advisory Group and as MENA Coordinator for the Coalition for the International Criminal Court.

She has contributed to regional and international human rights organizations, such as Freedom House and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, producing numerous reports. In Yemen, she co-founded Watan National Coalition, focusing on women’s parliamentary participation and gender advocacy. Her projects have covered legal protections for women prisoners, political empowerment, and transitional justice. Basha authored Equality Discourse in Yemeni Constitutions (2013) and has edited numerous human rights reports for UN treaty bodies, including CEDAW, CRC, and CAT.
