AL KAMANDJATI - PALESTINE

Cultural Excellence – 2015

Al Kamandjâti Association (AK) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 by Ramzi Aburedwan from Al Amari refugee camp. Its mission is to make music an accessible, integral part of Palestinian life, particularly for children in marginalized areas and refugee camps. By fostering music education, AK aims to strengthen Palestinian cultural identity and provide young people with creative opportunities.

AK runs music schools and education programs across six locations in Palestine—including Ramallah, Jenin, and refugee camps like Al Amari and Qalandiah—as well as in Lebanon’s Bourj el Barajneh and Chatila camps. Approximately 500 children between the ages of 5 and 18 participate annually, learning instruments, music theory, and finding pride in cultural expression.

The organization also covers 80% of tuition costs through scholarships, making these programs accessible to families in need. Additionally, AK has expanded to include music as part of the early curriculum, benefiting around 500 children aged 3 to 5 in Jenin-area kindergartens. Through its collaboration with UNRWA schools, AK brings music education to about 2,000 refugee children annually, encouraging creativity and resilience within Palestinian communities.
