FADLO R. KHURI - LEBANON
Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, MD, became the 16th President of the American University of Beirut (AUB) on September 1, 2015. Previously, he was a Professor and Roberto C. Goizueta Chair in Hematology & Medical Oncology at Emory University and served as Executive Associate Dean for Research and Deputy Director of the Winship Cancer Institute. An accomplished molecular oncologist, Dr. Khuri’s clinical interests focus on thoracic and head and neck oncology.
His research aims to improve care for tobacco-related cancers through molecular, prognostic, therapeutic, and chemopreventive approaches. His work has pioneered molecular-targeted therapies for lung and head and neck cancers, combining signal transduction inhibitors with chemotherapy.
During his tenure at Emory, Dr. Khuri recruited over 90 faculty members and co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed papers with more than 15,000 citations. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His leadership has attracted over $30 million in NIH funding to Emory. Dr. Khuri’s achievements include the Nagi Sahyoun Memorial Award from the Middle East Medical Assembly, election to the Lebanese Academy of Sciences, and the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award from the American Association of Cancer Research. His research centers on targeting survival signaling pathways in lung and aerodigestive cancers, making significant strides in oncology.
