AFAC - LEBANON
Cultural Excellence – 2023
The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), founded in 2007 by Arab cultural activists, is an independent foundation that supports artists, writers, researchers, intellectuals, and organizations from the Arab region working across various arts and cultural fields. Since its inception, AFAC has expanded its programs to cover cinema, photography, visual and performing arts, creative and critical writing, music, and documentary film, as well as research, training, and cultural events.
AFAC’s mission is organized into five strategic areas: providing grants, developing training initiatives, building and sharing knowledge, broadening the pool of arts supporters, and fostering engagement with contemporary arts by connecting them with audiences.
AFAC envisions a thriving cultural scene across the Arab region that encourages open, dynamic societies where diverse voices interact amid the region’s ongoing transformations. Active in 22 Arab countries and the diaspora, AFAC annually supports approximately 200 individuals and institutions. Over fifteen years, AFAC has awarded more than 2000 grants totaling around $40 million, reaching millions of viewers, processing over 20,000 applications, and working with about 400 readers and jurors. Based in Beirut, AFAC is committed to strengthening arts philanthropy and collaborates with the private sector to encourage entrepreneurship in cultural production, supporting artists and organizations across the Arab world and beyond.
